"The 2005 report prepared by the Chernobyl Forum, led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), attributed 56 direct deaths (47 accident workers, and nine children with thyroid cancer), and estimated that there may be 4,000 extra cancer cases among the approximately 600,000 most highly exposed and 5,000 among the 6 million living nearby."
As always, here are my favorites:

Bernadette,
Another fascinating blog post. It's so cool the way you use photography as a "lens" through which you can understand other issues -- Physics, nuclear fallout. You might be interested in reading Susan Sontag -- especially "On Photography" and "Regarding the Pain of Others." They're a little dense -- she was one of our most brilliant critics who died last year -- but they're always fascinating and full of insight.
